The Israel Taekwondo Federation have expressed their “deepest condolences” to the family of Anya Mirkin, who has died at the age of 29.

Mirkin, who was born in Ukraine but competed for Israel in taekwondo, reportedly died after suffering a heart attack.

She was a frequent medallist at international competitions throughout the duration of her career, including earning golds at the 2007 Austria Open and the Trelleborg Open in 2008.

Both of her triumphs came in the under 51 kilograms division and preceded her winning a bronze medal at the 2008 European Taekwondo Championships in Rome.

Despite her success, Mirkin failed to qualify for both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games.

However, she travelled to Beijing 2008 to act as a training partner for Bat-El Gatterer, who was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the women’s under 57kg event.
