Abu Dhabi has been announced as the host of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly in 2017, when elections will be held to replace the outgoing Sir Philip Craven as President of the organisation.

The Briton has held the role since 2001 but will step down after serving the maximum number of terms in the post, with the elections for the new President set to take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on September 8.

The successful candidate will become the third President of the IPC since its formation in 1989, with Canada’s Robert Steadward preceding Sir Philip.

Nominations are due to open in March 2017 and will have a deadline in June 2017, with the positions of IPC vice-president and 10 members of the Governing Board also up for election.

The last meeting of the current Governing Board is scheduled to take place from September 3 to 4 next year, with the IPC Congress taking place the following two days.

After the Congress, the General Assembly, which is being organised by the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of the United Arab Emirates, will be held from September 7 to 8.

"We are delighted that the 18th IPC General Assembly will be held in Abu Dhabi and would like to congratulate NPC UAE for their successful bid," said Xavier Gonzalez, IPC chief executive.

"Following Rio 2016, the next three Paralympic Games will take place in Asia so it is fitting that our General Assembly will also be held on the continent.

"With elections taking place and the guarantee of a new President, the stakes and interest levels will be extremely high.

"It is most likely that the 18th General Assembly will be the most well attended in the history of the IPC."

The last IPC General Assembly took place in Mexico City during November, when the headline news was the rejection of a motion to include a 23rd sport at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

The last Governing Board elections took place in Athens during 2013.

Around 400 delegates from the IPC’s 201 members, which include NPCs, International Federations, Regional Organisations and International Organisations of Sport for the Disabled, are expected to attend the General Assembly.

The Paralympic Sport and Media Awards have been scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on September 7, with the 2017 awards recognising the performances of athletes, teams, officials and the media from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

A number of individuals will also be awarded the Paralympic Order, the highest tribute a person connected to the Paralympic Movement can achieve, while the BP Courage Award will also be presented.

"I am delighted to invite the large Paralympic Family to Abu Dhabi city," said Theban Almheiri, secretary general of UAE NPC.

"I wish them a pleasant stay in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and I am looking forward to a memorable and very successful General Assembly next year."
