Italy came out on top in both the men's and women's races as the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Marathon World Cup resumed in Balatonfured in Hungary today.

Simone Ruffini claimed the men's title over 10 kilometres in Lake Balaton, with his compatriot Rachele Bruni taking the women's spoils.

The action in Hungary - where open-water swimming will take place at the 2024 Olympics if Budapest is successful with its bid - was the third leg of the World Cup season.

The last event took place in Abu Dhabi on February 26, so there has been a lengthy gap between races.

Ruffini, who won the 25km title at the World Championships in Kazan last year, came home in 1hr 50min 25sec to take gold ahead of Germany's Andreas Washburger who followed one second behind.

Canada's Richard Weinberger came home for bronze.

Ruffini now has a medal of every colour this season after coming second at the opening event in Patagones-Viedma, Argentina, before a bronze in Abu Dhabi.

Bruni, meanwhile, won her second race in three this season after she triumphed in Patagones.

The defending overall champion finished in 1:59.58, which was 0.11sec quicker than American Haley Anderson.

Germany's Isabelle Harle did enough for bronze, 0.13 adrift of the pace.

The season will now continue on July 28, with the fourth World Cup leg in Lac St-Jean, Canada.
