Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching progressed to the semi-finals of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Japan Open women's singles in Tokyo after securing an impressive victory over Singapore’s Feng Tianwei.

Their three previous meetings had all ended in victories for Feng, but the 29-year-old faced the prospect of defeat after Cheng won the opening two games of their quarter-final match 11-9, 11-7.

Feng was able to respond in the next games to draw level in the match, only for Cheng to regain control to eventually emerge as an 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-3, 12-10 winner of the contest, against the sixth seeded player.

“All I can say is wow, amazing, oh my God,” said Cheng

“I can’t believe it, the match was just perfect, my biggest win.

“I played so well, everything went like a dream; I am so happy, wow.”

She will now face China’s Ding Ning, who recorded an 11-5, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6 win over home favourite Hayata Hina.

Reigning Olympic champion Li Xiaoxia fell to defeat to her Chinese team-mate Zhu Yuling in their quarter-final tie.

Zhu, who despite being ranked third in the world was not selected in China’s team for Rio 2016, battled to an 11-8, 11-9, 5-11, 14-12, 11-6 win over Li.

She will now meet Liu Shiwen in the semi-finals, after the Chinese player earned an 11-7, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 win against Hong Kong’s Tie Yana.

In the men’s event, world number one Ma Long ended home hopes of success by cruising to a 11-7, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 victory over Japan’s Jun Mizutani in their quarter-final contest.

He will now compete in an all-Chinese semi-final against Xu Xin, who defeated Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting 11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8.

The Chinese team are already assured of winning the tournament, after Zhang Jike and Fan Zhendong triumphed in their quarter-finals.

Zhang defeated Belarus’ Vladimir Samsonov 11-8, 5-11, 15-13, 11-2, 8-11, 11-6, while Fan overcame Simon Gauzy 7-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.
