Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jay Lyon has been banned for two years by World Archery following a failed drugs test.

The Canadian recurve shooter received a suspension until May 19, 2018 - which rules him out of this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro - after testing positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrine.

His sanction comes after an independent anti-doping panel hearing in Lausanne.

"Jay Lyon was found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation pursuant to Article 36.2.1 of the Anti-Doping Rules of World Archery and has been sanctioned with a period of ineligibility of two years, commencing 19 May 2016," a statement from the governing body said.

Thirty-year-old Lyon, who won the individual silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, had previously told the Winnipeg Free Press that he "never intentionally took anything".

Oxilofrine, which is not a controlled substance in North America, is said to be present in a number of products which has subsequently resulted in athletes being caught out.

The most high profile pair were Jamaica's Olympic champion sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson, who were banned for 18-months before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) slashed their suspensions to just six months.

Both, like Lyon, had claimed that they had not taken the drug on purpose.

Lyon also won an individual recurve bronze medal at his home Pan American Games in Toronto last year.

That added to a team silver he won at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

He may now opt to appeal his ban at the CAS and has 21 days to do so.

It is not the first time he has been involved in controversy, with Archery Canada taking him to a sport arbitration hearing due to comments he made about the organisation.

The governing body wanted to revoke his national team membership but the hearing ruled against this.

Lyon did, however, have to produce a written apology.

World Archery has also handed a one-year ban to El Salvador competitor Oscar Ticas, for another doping violation.

The 29-year-old, who competed in the individual recurve event at last year's World Championships in Copenhagen, is banned until May 12, 2017 but can also appeal to CAS.
