Erlend Slokvik has been elected President of the Norwegian Biathlon Association (NSSF) to replace Tore Bøygard.

Slokvik, who was elected at the NSSF Congress, is a former athlete who won ski orienteering World Championship relay bronze medals in 1988 and 1990.

He served as head coach of the Norwegian ski-orienteering team before moving to biathlon, where he has served as NSSF vice-president for the last eight years while being heavily involved in the organisation of this year's World Championships in Oslo.

"I think we have two main priorities," he said after his election.

"In the short-term, it is still to be among the top nations; it is very important that we perform well at the next Olympics.

"But in the longer term, it is more about recruitment; how we can stay in the position of the leading nation, how we can continue to have the top athletes?

"This includes having excellent trainers for youngsters and arenas for training."

Bøygard announced his plans to stand down before the election after having led the organisation for a decade since 2006.

He plans to continue his work as an IBU technical delegate.

"I believe that Norwegian biathlon will be strong in the future," said the outgoing President.

"We had an extreme journey the last 20 years in biathlon.

"Back then Norway was not on the top level, there was not so much financial investment and not so many top-level athletes.

"In 1996 we started at the bottom and built the structure stone by stone."

It comes after Norway won four gold medals at the Oslo World Championships, finishing second on the medals table behind France.
