World champions Australia overcame a two goal deficit to beat Olympic champions Germany and move three points clear at the top of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Champions Trophy table in London.

The Kookaburras recorded a 4-3 victory over the Germans, who are the defending champions of the competition, in an exciting encounter at Lee Valley.

Florian Fuchs put Germany in front after 12 minutes and Tobias Hauke doubled his side's advantage two minutes later.

Glenn Turner brought Australia back into the match and Tristan White levelled after 22 minutes following a frantic opening.

Germany edged back in front thanks to Fuchs' second of the game but Blake Govers and Aran Zalewski struck to seal it for the Australians.

"I’m really happy with the performance”, said Australia’s Simon Orchard, who was playing his 200th senior international for the Kookaburras.

"We showed a bit of grit, determination and character, which sometimes with a younger group of players can be in question.

"It was really pleasing to go down 2-0 early with things not going exactly our way and fight back.

"It's just reward for a really good effort in the rain.”

Hosts Britain moved into second place in the six-team tournament after their opening win of the tournament, a 4-1 success over South Korea.

They scored a goal in each quarter with Ashley Jackson and Alastair Brogdon registering, as well as a brace from David Condon.

Belgium also recorded a first win with a 2-1 success over India.

Alexander Hendrickx scored the opening goal before Devindar Walmiki levelled, and Jérôme Truyens then settled the contest.

Britain, India and Belgium all boast one win, one draw and a defeat with India third and Belgium fourth on goal difference.

South Korea, with one win and two defeats, are fifth, with Germany last on two draws.

The top two countries will go through to the final with two round-robin matches left to play.

India play South Korea tomorrow, with Britain meeting Germany and Australia clashing with Belgium.
