Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst will be among the favourites for the women’s title at this week’s International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Olsztyn Grand Slam in Poland as they go in search of a fourth gold medal of the year.

Fresh from winning top honours at the FIVB Major Series event in Hamburg on Saturday (June 11), the pair will be competing at the six-day event which is due to begin tomorrow.

Success in the German city came on the back of wins at the European Championships in Swiss city Biel-Bienne and the Antalya Open in Turkey, either side of a ninth-place finish at the Moscow Grand Slam.

As for the men's draw in Olsztyn, Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt are the top-seeded preliminary team, followed by the United States' Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson, and compatriots Pedro Solberg and Evandro Goncalves.

Meanwhile, Gregorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel will be looking for a medal this week as they play in their home country.

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour returns to Olsztyn, the capital of Warmian-Masurian province, with less than two months until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

A total of 58 men’s teams from 25 countries and 46 women’s teams from 20 countries are due to compete.

Qualifying tournaments will be held tomorrow for women and Wednesday (June 15) for men to determine the final eight teams for each 32-team main draw.

"I would like to thank the authorities who engaged so deeply in organising this event and in promoting the Warmian-Masurian region," said Polish Volleyball Federation President Paweł Papke.

"We all know that the Grand Slam is a wonderful promotion of our region, but also of beach volleyball and of the Polish Volleyball Federation."

The FIVB Major Series event in Hamburg brought an end to the FIVB World Tour’s Olympic qualifying.

Prior to Rio 2016, there are three Major Series events scheduled with the first due to take place in Croatian town Porec from June 28 to July 3.

Gstaad in Switzerland is set to host the second from July 5 to 9, before Austrian city Klagenfurt stages the last one from July 26 to 31.
