Rome 2024 are hoping the Regional Government will give the green light for a new stadium in the capital so they can host the Olympic football final there if they are successful with their bid, director general Diana Bianchedi has told insidethegames.

The Stadio Della Roma, which will become the home of one of Italy’s most famous Serie A clubs, is due to be ready in time for AS Roma to move in ahead of the 2018-2019 season but the project still needs to be rubber-stamped.

The stadium has been hit by delays, raising the possibility that it might not be ready in time for its scheduled completion date.

The finalised dossier for the plans for the stadium was submitted to the Rome City Hall and Lazio Region last month and the case has now been assigned an official protocol number by the Rome City Administration and the Lazio Region.

AS Roma claim this is a "fundamental milestone in the approval procedure".

The next phase of the process includes the formal transmission of the project from Rome City Administration to the Lazio Region, which is expected to last a maximum of 180 days.

Construction work at the stadium, located in the Tor di Valle region of the city, will not be authorised until the Regional Government approve the project.

The new venue was earmarked as a possible location for the finals of the Olympic tournaments at Rome 2024 in the Bid Committee’s Candidature File, along with the Stadio Olimpico, which is shared by both AS Roma and arch city rivals Lazio.

Rome’s Stadio Olimpico was expected to stage the football finals but Bianchedi is keen on the use of the Stadio Della Roma.

The two-time Olympic fencing champion believes it will make more logistical sense to host the finals at the new stadium as the Stadio Olimpico has been put forward as the venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Bianchedi admitted it is “very difficult” to stage the final and the Closing Ceremony on the same day, adding that “we know it can be done but we don’t like to do it”.

“AS Roma stadium is not depending on our bid - it is depending on the decision of the Municipality and AS Roma but for sure, we need it,” she told insidethegames.

“If they are able to do it, we will use it for the final.

“It is very difficult to manage the final and the Closing Ceremony on the same day.

“If we have the Roma Stadium, the final will be there.”

Rome 2024 has also proposed the Juventus Stadium, where last season's Serie A champions play their home matches, and Stadio San Paolo, home of Napoli, the club where Argentina's Diego Maradona enjoyed the best years of his career, among its proposed venues.

A total of 11 cities have been put forward in all.

Other stadiums chosen are the Bentegoda Stadium in Verona, Friuli Stadium in Udine, Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Dall'Ara Stadium in Bologna, Franchi Stadium in Florence, St Nicholas Stadium in Bari and Barbera Stadium in Palermo.

The tournament will be divided into two parts involving the entire country, Rome 2024 have promised.

The group stages will be hosted in Turin, Genoa, Udine, Verona, Bologna, Florence, Bari and Palermo.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played in Milan and Naples, with the two venues sharing the six knock-out matches in the men's and women's tournaments between them.
