In the women's competition, the top ranked player was also knocked out as Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon went down to India's Saina Nehwal.

Intanon has already won three Super Series crowns this year and the number two seed was favourite after the withdrawal of Spain's top ranked world champion Carolina Marin.

Nehwal, the number seven seed, prevailed, however, with the Olympic bronze medallist winning 28-26, 21-16.

She will play China's Wang Yihan in the semi-finals after her 21-19, 21-15 win over Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu-ying.

Two more Chinese players will contest the other last four clash, including third-seeded Olympic champion Li Xuerui who beat her compatriot Wang Shixian 21-19, 21-17.

She will play Sun Yu, who got the better of Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 21-18, 21-9.
