Reigning International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) world champions Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas of Brazil made a perfect start to their campaign at the FIVB Major Series event in Hamburg as they continue their quest of a home gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The fourth seeds opened play with a 21-19, 21-15 Pool D win over 13th-seeded compatriots Eduarda "Duda" Lisboa and Elize Maia in 34 minutes.

They followed this up by posting a come-from-behind 16-21, 29-27, 18-16 victory over 29th-seeded qualifiers Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner of Germany in 55 minutes.

Their promising start comes on the back of placing 17th in their last FIVB World Tour appearance for their worst international beach volleyball placement in 17 events.

Bednarczuk and Seixas had not finished lower than ninth at a FIVB World Tour stop since September 2014 until last month's Moscow Grand Slam where the Brazilian pair were the top-seeded team.

"We are not disappointed with our play to date this season, but we were expecting to do better, especially in Moscow where we had high expectations," said the 28-year old Seixas.

"Our overall record is not bad - the key is being patient.

"Of course, already securing an Olympic berth has relieved a lot of pressure on us, but still we need to play better and play with more purpose as we prepare for Rio."

Bednarczuk and Seixas are due to conclude pool play tomorrow against 20th-seeded Linline Matauatu and Miller Pata of Vanuatu.

The two teams have met once on the FIVB World Tour with the Vanuatuans defeating their Brazilian counterparts 21-12, 19-21, 15-13 at a United States Grand Slam in Long Beach last August.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, 19th-seeded Maria Antonelli and Liliane Maestrini of Brazil scored a 21-12, 13-21, 20-18 Pool C victory over third-seeded April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings to end the American’s 23-match winning streak.

With an earlier 15-21, 21-10, 15-11 win over 14th-seeded Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth of Italy, Antonelli and Maestrini play 30th-seeded qualifiers Teresa Mersmann and Isabel Schneider of Germany tomorrow.

In the men’s draw, Germany’s Marcus Bockermann and Lars Fluggen delighted the home crowd after coming from behind to register an 18-21, 23-21, 15-12 victory over Olympic-bound Italians Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri in their opening match.

Bockermann and Fluggen are locked in a struggle to qualify for the Olympics and Hamburg is the last stop on the FIVB World Tour to claim qualifying points.

The team they’re duelling with is fellow Germans Kay Matysik and Jonathan Erdmann, who arrived in Hamburg tied for the last spot in the qualification with the same amount of points.

Tomorrow, Bockermann and Fluggen have two matches to finish play in Pool A, starting against Norway’s Iver Horrem and Geir Eithun before finishing against top-ranked Brazilians Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt.

The top three teams from each pool advance to Friday’s (June 10) elimination bracket where the women will play three rounds and the men two.

The winners of each group earn a first-round elimination "bye".
