Vitalii Koriakin overcame Vasilii Kutuev in an all-Russian men’s under 66 kilograms final on the opening day of the Visually Impaired Judo Grand Prix in Walsall in Britain.

Koriakin proved too strong for his compatriot, who had to settle for the runners-up spot ahead of bronze medallists Marcos Falcon Tovar of Venezuela and Jongseok Park of South Korea at the University of Wolverhampton, Walsall Campus Sports Complex.

There was further Russian involvement in the men’s under 73kg final as Yurii Dallakian lost by ippon after two minutes of his contest with Germany’s Nikolai Kornhass.

Dallakian’s fellow countryman Viktor Rudenko and Spain’s Alvaro Gavilan Lorenzo claimed the bronze medals.

Romania’s Alexandru Bologa took the men’s under 60kg gold medal after a long battle with South Korea’s Min Jae Lee, while Canada’s Justin Karn and Kazakhstan’s Anuar Sariyev rounded out the podium.

The men’s under 81kg final saw France's Cyril Jonard win the gold medal after throwing Argentina's Jose David Effron for ippon.

The bronze medals went to Germany’s Sebastian Junk and Russia’s Shamil Magomedov.

Silver was taken by Russia’s Olga Zabrodskaia, with the sole bronze medal going the way of her compatriot Tatiana Savostianova.

In the women’s over 70kg category, the two competitors fought in a best-of-three format with Belarus' Arina Kachan taking the win in each of her three contests against the United States’ Christella Garica.

Tomorrow, attention turns to the men’s under 90kg, under 100kg, over 100kg categories as well as the women’s under 48kg, under 52kg, under 57kg and under 63kg classes.

Two-time Paralympic medallist Sam Ingram will be in action in the under 90kg, alongside fellow Britons and Rio 2016 medal hopefuls Chris Skelley and Jack Hodgson in the under 100kg and over 100kg classes respectively.
