Sam Beckett became the first British skateboarder to win an X Games gold medal after triumphing in the men’s skateboard vert event on the second day of competition in Austin.

The 24-year-old had been forced to settle for the bronze medal at the last year’s event in the Texan city, but produced an excellent second run to achieve a score of 89.33 points at the at the Circuit of the America’s motorsport facility.

Beckett was unable to stretch his advantage over the field in the third and final run of the competition, but it proved enough to see him claim top spot on the podium.

Japan’s Moto Shibata secured the silver medal by achieving a score of 88.66 points, while 86.00 was enough for American skateboarder Jimmy Wilkins to complete the podium positions.

The amateur skateboard street competition saw the United States’ Tyson Bowerbank earn the title he won back in 2014, finishing on a tally of 89.66.

Christian Dufrene and Jagger Eaton scored 88.00 and 86.66 points respectively to complete an all-American top three.

While Beckett had clinched his maiden title in the skateboard vert competition, his compatriot Jamie Bestwick continued his domination of BMX vert events.

The Briton headed into the competition looking to earn his 14th X Games gold medal in the discipline and produced a stunning first run to receive a score of 90.66 points, before achieving 90.00 in his final run.

Bestwick was the only rider to breach the 90 point mark throughout the duration of the competition, which saw cyclists aim to impress the judges during two runs.

Fellow Briton Simon Tabron was the closest to threatening Bestwick, with his efforts seeing him score 86.00 points to claim the silver medal.

The podium was completed by home favourite Dennis McCoy, who ended on 84.00 points.

Australia’s Josh Sheehan claimed the gold medal in the in the light moto X freestyle final by scoring 93.33, with his compatriots Rob Adelberg and Clinton Moore rounding off the medal positions by finishing on 91.66 and 91.00 points respectively.

The skateboard big air competition was postponed to tomorrow, due to weather conditions worsening at the event.
