Olympic champion Kayla Harrison triumphed in her showdown with Brazil’s Mayra Aguiar to claim gold in the women’s under 78 kilograms event at the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Judo Masters at the Lopez Mateo Sports Centre in Guadalajara.

The duo had headed into the invite-only competition, featuring the top 16 judokas in the each weight divisions, boasting an identical record of eight wins in their 16 meetings to date.

Having both progressed to the final, Harrison laid down a marker ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by taking the lead in the contest through a yuko, before forcing her opponent to submit to seal the victory.

Two waza-ari scores from Natalie Powell saw her win bronze against China’s Zhehui Zhang, with the result moving her into the top eight judokas in the Olympic qualification list.

The result could prove pivotal in her chances of reaching Rio 2016 ahead of team-mate and London 2012 silver medallist Gemma Gibbons, who fell to a yuko defeat to The Netherlands’ Guusje Steenhuis.

Cuba’s Idalys Ortiz will is another reigning Olympic champion who will head to Rio 2016 fresh from earning a World Judo Masters title.

The 26-year-old led her contest with China’s Sisi Ma by a waza-ari in the over 78kg final, before holding her opponent down for 15 seconds to seal the triumph.

Japan’s Kanae Yamabe and Bosnia’s Larisa Ceric earned bronze medals in the division by recording ippon victories over Ukraine’s Svitlana Iaromka and Tunisia’s Nihel Cheikh Rouhou respectively.

Men’s under 100kg world number one Elmar Gasimov boosted his hopes of success at Rio 2016 by securing the top seeding at the Games by beating France’s Cyrille Maret.
