Two-time world champion Douglas Brose delivered success for the host nation as he secured gold in the men’s kumite under 60 kilograms event on the second day of the Pan American Karate Championships in Rio de Janeiro.

The 30-year-old harnessed the energy of the home crowd on his way to the top of the podium as he overcame Colombia's Andres Rendon in the final.

Venezuelan Jovanni Martinez and Brose’s compatriot Edemilson Dos Santos took home a bronze medal apiece.

There was more for the Brazilian fans to cheer as Brazil’s Beatriz Mafra prevailed in the women’s under 50kg kumite category, sealing her maiden title at senior continental level by beating Andrea Hidalgo of Peru.

Ana Keyla earned a rare medal for Nicaragua with bronze, with the other in the division going to Chilean Gabriela Bruna.

It also proved to be a fruitful second day of action in the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city for the Dominican Republic, who followed Brazil’s lead in claiming two titles.

Deivis Ferreras defeated Venezuela's Andres Madera to win the men’s under 67kg kumite category, with a pair of Brazilians, Breno Teixeira and Vinicius Figueira, each clinching bronze.

Jorge Perez then stunned the partisan Brazilian support by beating home favourite Alberto Azevedo in the final of the men’s under 84kg kumite discipline to guide the Dominican Republic to third place on the medals table.

Colombian Carlos Sinisterra and El Salvador’s Jorge Merino were the recipients of the bronze medals.

Giuliana Novak handed Argentina their first gold of the event with victory over Peru's Alessandra Vindrola in the final of the women’s under 55kg kumite division, while Chile’s Constanza Paredes and Brandi Robinson of the United States finished on a high as they took bronze.

Elsewhere, Ecuador also enjoyed their maiden title in Rio thanks to Valeria Echever, who reigned supreme in the women’s over 68kg category by ousting Mallory Isabel of Peru.

Mexican duo Isabel Mendoza and Catzin Quintal did enough for bronze as their nation failed to replicate their impressive showing on day one.

The 2016 Pan American Karate Championships conclude tomorrow.
