Turkey celebrated claiming two Rio 2016 Olympic berths after success at the World Archery European Olympic continental qualifier in Nottingham.

Three recurve places were on offer in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with victories in the semi-final stage guaranteeing archers a spot at the Games.

Women’s top seed Yasemin Anagoz proved untroubled throughout the duration of the event, which resumed today at the second round stage, as she eased through the rounds.

A 6-2 quarter-finals victory over Sweden’s Christine Bjerendal put Anagoz on the brink of sealing an Olympic place, which the Turkish archer sealed in style by defeating Azerbaijan’s Olga Senyuk 6-0.

Slovakia’s Alexandra Longova emerged as a 6-4 win over Hanna Marusava in the second semi-final, which consigned the Belarusian archer to a showdown with Senyuk for the third and final berth.

Senyuk had narrowly missed out in the main qualifying competition in Copenhagen last summer, but avoided the same fate by defeating Marusava 6-2.

The result ensured that she would become the first Azerbaijani archer to compete at an Olympic Games.

“I was really scared that was going to happen again,” Senyuk said.

“Before the last match, I was very nervous, I wasn’t sure I had it - but I had really good support.

“It really helped me, I came out, and did my best and I did it.”

Following Anagoz’s success in the women’s event, 16-year-old Mete Gazoz became the second Turkish athlete to book their spot at the Games.

Having already reached the European Championship final on Sunday (May 29), Gazoz continued his excellent form by beating Finland’s Samuli Piippo in a shoot-off in the men’s final.

The duo had earned Rio 2016 berths by beating Britain’s Patrick Hudson and Serbia’s Luka Popovic respectively.

In front of a home crowd, Hudson held his nerve to triumph 6-4 in the third place play-off to secure the third and final qualification spot.

Archers will have a final chance to qualify either individual or team places for Rio 2016 at the third stage of the Archery World Cup in Antalya, with a minimum of 24 places set to be on offer in Turkey.
