Olympic champion Nicola Adams' pursuit of a first-ever global title came to an end here today at the Women’s World Boxing Championships as hosts Kazakhstan topped the medals table with four golds.

The Briton, a three-time world silver medallist, was made to work hard by Thailand’s Peamwilai Laopeam in the flyweight final before eventually triumphing on a split decision.

Victory for the reigning Olympic, Commonwealth and European Games champion completes her gold medal collection having also won European and European Union titles previously.

"It feels amazing to have won the World Championships after three silvers," said Adams, who will be aiming to retain her Olympic title in Rio de Janeiro this summer.

"I felt nervous going into the bout, but I use that as a positive energy and I needed that edge in a tough bout.

"Now I’m looking forward to the Olympics and defending my title in Rio."

Today’s finals began with a physical encounter between home favourite and defending champion Nazym Kyzaibay and China’s Yuyan Wang.

The Kazakh assumed an early dominance and refused to let the advantage slip on her way to a unanimous points win.

"I am so happy that I won the gold medal today in Astana," said Kyzaibay.

"I tried to display my best boxing in every bout, but I want to give huge thanks to all of the boxing fans who have supported me and the team throughout these championships."

Bulgarian Stoyka Petrova has been in thrilling form all week but came unstuck against Kazakhstan’s Dina Zholaman in a tight bantamweight final.

Both boxers tried to get in close and with few clean-scoring punches, it was Zholaman’s stamina that saw her through to a hard-earned gold.

Kazakhstan’s third title of the day came at welterweight as Valentina Khalzova recovered from a slow start to claim a famous victory over the tall figure of China’s Hong Gu.

Lazzat Kungeibayeva made it four in the last final of day, beating the United States' Shadasia Green to take heavyweight gold.

Roared on by an animated home crowd, Kungeibayeva won the final two rounds to earn a unanimous points win against Green, who reached the gold medal match in what was the first international tournament of her career.

Top-seeded featherweight Alessia Mesiano of Italy fulfilled her pre-tournament promise by beating India’s Sonia Lather to the gold medal.

Mesiano grew to her task after a testing opening round, taking the initiative in the crucial third and having the stamina to take home the title.

Having defeated reigning lightweight champion Katie Taylor of Ireland in her semi-final, Estelle Mossely’s world title bid was completed in style with a unanimous points win against Russia’s former world champion Anastasiia Beliakova.

Mossely had already secured a spot for the French team at Rio 2016, and she rounded off a superb campaign with a gold medal.

Chinese light welterweight Wenlu Yang then halted Kellie Harrington’s bold bid for gold, putting pressure on her Irish opponent from the outset.

Yang’s fast hands and speed around the ring proved decisive and earned the Chinese team their first gold of the championships.

Olympic middleweight champion Claressa Shields gave away a few inches to her Dutch opponent Nouchka Fontijn, but that didn’t stop the American powering through to the successful defence of her world title.

A strong second round from Fontijn gave her hope, but Shields fought back brilliantly to claim her second global crown.

In the one other final, defending light heavyweight champion Xiaoli Yang of China produced a dominant performance against Kaye Scott to deny the Australian team a first-ever World Championship gold medal.
