Brazil's Gustavo Carvalhaes and Saymon Barbosa claimed the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Cincinnati Open title with a convincing final victory in Ohio.

After a close first set, the champions kicked into gear in the second as they saw off Canada's Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter 22-20, 21-8.

The Brazilians won all seven of their games at the tournament and didn't drop a set in the elimination stages as they won their maiden title at World Tour level.

"It’s our first final and the first gold medal and we are very happy,” said Carvalhaes.

"I don’t know what is happening yet.

"I just want to celebrate.

“For us it’s a big victory.

"We are working hard for this.

"It was our objective to come to the semi-finals, and it’s this.”

Before the final, the Brazilian pair came through their last four clash with Americans John Mayer and Ryan Doherty, 21-19, 21-16.

The former world under-21 champions had never before contested a gold medal match.

Binstock and Schachter upset American second seeds Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in their semi-final, 21-17, 10-21, 15-12.

In the all American battle for bronze, Dalhausser and Lucena came through 21-15, 21-16.

In the women's competition, top seeds Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross came from behind to beat China's Xinyi Xia and Chen Xue for gold.

Walsh Jennings, a triple Olympic champion, has now won four tournaments alongside Ross this season.

They came through 20-22, 21-14, 18-16 after earlier ousting Spain's Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandes, 21-14, 21-16, in the semi-finals.

The Chinese team were too strong for Dutch players Jantine van der Vlist and Sophie van Gestel, 21-19, 21-17.

It was the Spaniards who took bronze, beating their European rivals 21-17, 21-18.
