Bangkok will host the Asia-Oceania qualifying tournament for the 2017 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Men's Under-23 World Championship, it has been announced.

The governing body confirmed the choice of the Thai capital after the World Championships were awarded to Canadian city Toronto.

IWBF Asia-Oceania zone President Saad Alazma welcomed the selection, with the qualification event set to take place in January.

"I'm really excited at the prospect of having up to 10 teams of young players fighting for the right to represent their zone at next year's World Championships," he said.

"There are a number of nations that are developing teams for the future, and we have seen a significant rise in the number of teams in the Asia-Oceania zone since the qualifiers for the previous World Championships in 2013."

Twelve countries, including the hosts, will take part in Toronto with the top prize for junior players up for grabs.

Competition will take place between June 8 and 16 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The tournament, which is held every four years, will be in its sixth edition next year.

Canada won the inaugural title in 1997 - also in Toronto - with next year's event marking the 20-year anniversary of that occasion.

The game schedule, ticketing and volunteer information will all be finalised at a later date.

Germany are the defending champions after winning in Adana, Turkey, in 2013.
