A Tokyo-based factory group has donated a bobsleigh to Jamaica’s national team to help them in their bid to secure a place at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The "Shitamachi Bobsleigh" will be provided for free by the manufacturers that have developed it in Japan’s capital’s Ōta ward.

The gesture comes after they were rejected by the Japan Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton Federation, which use German-made sleds.

"There is going to be Jamaican athletes winning medals at the 2018 Olympic Games using a Shitamachi Bobsleigh," claimed Chris Stokes, President of the Jamaican Bobsleigh Federation.

Approximately 100 factories offered their expertise to develop the sled and have been working closely with the Jamaican team to fine-tune the equipment.

If the team is successful in qualifying for Pyeongchang 2018, it will mark the 30-year anniversary of their Olympic bobsleigh debut which was the inspiration for the 1993 Hollywood film "Cool Runnings".

After making their debut at Calgary 1988, Jamaica participated in the next four Winter Olympics.

Despite missing Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010, they announced their return to the Games less than a month before Sochi 2014.

This came amid a plea for support in travelling to Sochi due to their lack of funding.
