The President of the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) has held a meeting with a former leader of the country.

Negroes Kgosietsile, who currently heads BNOC, held the discussions with ex-President of Botswana Sir Ketumile Masire as the latter is a Patron of the governing body.

The meeting updated Masire, who led his country between 1980 and 1998, on the work being carried out by BNOC ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.

Preparations for the Botswana team ahead of their journey to Brazil was one of the key topics on the agenda, with the African country set to compete on the biggest stage for the 10th time in their history in record numbers.

Doping was another major subject matter discussed, with BNOC currently serving as an interim National Anti-Doping Organisation.

Masire, 90, said he was concerned about the increasing scandal of illegal drug-use in sport, including in Botswana, and recommended a law making the supply of banned substances to athletes illegal.

Kenya, another African country, recently introduced legislation to this effect.

Kgosietsile also briefed the former President on BNOC's recent achievements and the challenges ahead.

He was joined by Board members Michael Moroka and Tshepo Sitale, chief executive Tuelo Serufho and marketing and communication manager Lame Ramokate.

BNOC receives annual grants from Botswana's Government and the International Olympic Committee to support its operations.

The body also receives occasional grants from the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.
