Great Britain’s reigning world champion Aled Davies began his build-up to Rio 2016 in superb style with a world record breaking performance to claim shot put spoils in the opening day of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Grand Prix in the Sun Angel Stadium in Arizona.

Davies, the London 2012 discus champion who also claimed shot put bronze, improved on his own F42 mark with a fourth round effort of 16.13 metres.

It came at the end of a period of warm weather training in Arizona.

“It was my first outdoor meet of the year so it was nice to [set a] personal best even though I was shaking out the cobwebs," he said afterwards.

“I’m excited to build on that performance and see what I can produce this year.

"I don’t compete much as I’m injury prone - the plan is to get to Rio in one piece.”

Other throwing winners included home discus star Scott Winkler, world bronze medallist in 2013, who won the F55 event his fourth round effort of 28.25m, while fellow American Johnnie Williams III threw 35.90m to win in the F56 class.

United States' F51 discus world champion Rachael Morrison threw an impressive 12.82m with her third round effort, just four centimetres shy of the world record mark she set on her way to global gold last year.

The 28-year-old lost out to her team-mate and rival Cassie Mitchell in the club throw however, only registering one throw - of 14.94m - as Mitchell took the win with 20.10m to go top of the world rankings..

US sprinter and world record holder David Brown was the top performer on the track, winning the 200m T11 in 23.08.

Britain's Dave Henson lay down his marker for the season with a standout win in the 200m T42 class in 24.71.

The 31-year-old got the better of a strong field including Denmark’s world bronze medallist Daniel Jorgensen, in 25.73, and Paralympic silver medallist Shaquille Vance, who clocked 25.91.

There was also plenty of Mexican success as Fidel Aguilar won the T52/53 800 metres in 1:53.64, beating T52 multiple world champion Ray Martin by 0.14.

 Mexico’s T11 star Alejandro Pacheco then claimed 5,000m T11/T12/T13 spoils in 16:49.55.
