The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC) has hosted talks on sports medicine and anti-doping in its capital Riga.

Aldons Vrublevskis, the President of the LOC who is also a qualified sports lawyer, welcomed Medical and Anti-Doping Commission members from the umbrella European Olympic Committees (EOC) organisation.

The party included chairman Dr Klaus Steinbach, with the German joined by members Dr Nortberts Bahl of Austria, Dr Jaroslavs Vetvička of the Czech Republic, Dr Emin Ergen of Turkey, Dr Christian Schneider of Germany and Dr Mark Stewart of Great Britain.

They had been invited by Dr Liga Cirule, the chief physician of the Latvian Olympic team.

Anti-doping is a hot-topic in sport at the moment, with the meldonium crisis coupling with the allegations of widespread drug-use in Russia.

The meeting prepared some recommendations to further strengthen the fight against doping in Europe.

A press conference was also held to give Latvian media the opportunity to meet the Commission members and to learn more about how the EOC is tackling the problem.

The meeting comes as Latvia continues its preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

At London 2012, the country won one gold medal, courtesy of Maris Strombergs in the men's BMX.

They won one further medal, a bronze in the men's beach volleyball thanks to Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins.
