FIFA President Gianni Infantino held a 90-minute meeting with members of his “Legends” team here to begin a process which will see the group of ex-professionals have “day to day” input into the decision-making at the scandal-hit governing body.

The aim of the “think tank” session was to provide a forum for open discussion among the assembled group of “Legends”, featuring a host of the game’s most household names including former Portugal international Luis Figo and Brazilian star Ronaldinho.

Infantino, elected as the head of FIFA at an Extraordinary Congress in Zurich, hopes to utilise the players to get the world talking about football again following a tumultuous year for the organisation, which has included the arrests and indictment of several leading officials on corruption charges.

The team, led by former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, will play a series of matches across the globe in the near future and are also set to participate in a host of charity events to boost the battered reputation of the sport.

It comes as part of Infantino’s pledge to give a stronger voice to those with direct involvement in the game.

The Swiss is expected to give a detailed update on the “Legends” initiative to the organisation's 209 Member Associations during tomorrow’s 66th FIFA Congress.

“I would like to have your views on topics that are important for football,” said Infantino.

“And who better than you, given that you have dedicated your lives to either playing or coaching.

“It’s the beginning of something, and I’m sure it will be something great.”

Questions have, however, been raised about the financing of the “Legends” scheme as the players, along with Mourinho, have been flown out to Mexico at considerable expense.

Exact details of remuneration for the team have not been revealed.

A large number of the “Legends”, took part in a special nine versus nine match against a Mexican all-stars team to mark the 50th anniversary of the Azteca Stadium last night.

The likes of Italian World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, Dutchman Clarence Seedorf and Spain’s Carles Puyol, a winner of the European Championships in 2008 and the World Cup two years later, all featured for the team, captained by Figo, which suffered a 9-8 defeat.

The players also featured in the Opening Ceremony of the Congress as they were paraded on stage by Infantino during his speech to the attendees.
