Switzerland’s Sina Frei broke clear on the fourth lap of the women’s under-23 event at the European Cycling Union (UEC) Mountain Bike Cross-Country Championships to earn dominant gold in Huskvarna, Sweden.

Frei had joined home favourite Jenny Rissveds in breaking clear of the main field after two of five laps of the 21.5 kilometre course, with the Swedish rider excelling on the technical parts of the route.

The penultimate lap, though, saw Frei take control of the race as an acceleration took her clear of Rissveds and she quickly established a 30 second advantage.

It proved too much of a gap for Rissveds to overhaul in the closing stages and she eventually slipped further off the pace, ending 59 seconds behind the winner’s time of one hour and 24min.

The podium was completed by Evie Richards, who won the women’s under-23 Cyclo-cross world title in February, with the British rider completing the course in 1:26:22.

Richards’ team-mate Sophie Wright was able to earn the women’s junior title, after she clocked a time of 1:08:13 at the conclusion of their 17km race.

France’s Hélène Clauzels ended 3:02 behind Wright but was able to claim the silver medal, with Denmark’s Caroline Bohé finishing third in 1:11:56.

A surprise result saw Italy’s Martina Berta, the reigning world champion, finish in seventh position in 1:14:18.

Thomas Bonnet triumphed in the junior men’s race as the Frenchman crossed the line in a time of 1:13:09, with Switzerland’s Vital Albin ending 38 seconds behind.

Bonnet’s team-mate Azel Zingle secured bronze by finishing in 1:14:41.

The Championships will draw to a close tomorrow with the men’s and women’s elite races, as well as the men’s under-23 event.
