The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) is set to host a referee-coach joint training camp in Muju this week as the international governing body’s preparations for this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro continue.

A total of 30 international referees from 30 countries and 50 coaches from 40 countries will participate in the event, due to take place from Thursday (May 5) until Sunday (May 8) at the South Korean county’s dedicated taekwondo facility, the Taekwondowon.

It is designed as a tune-up for officials before Rio 2016 with a final referee training camp scheduled for July in a location to be decided.

During the camp, discussions will be held on competition methods, rules, scoring systems and anti-doping.

Simulations of potential scenarios that could occur during the Olympics will also be conducted.

The camp is considered essential due to changes in taekwondo since the 2012 Olympics in London.

At Rio 2016, there will be electronic sensors in the head protectors, whereas at London 2012, the sensors were only in the torso protectors.

Another difference between the two Olympics will be the appearance of the uniforms with national coloured trousers allowed at Rio 2016 as opposed to the plain white ones worn at London 2012.

The shape of the competition mat has also been changed from square to octagonal in a bid to encourage livelier footwork.

"Olympic taekwondo today is more dynamic and fairer than ever before," said WTF President Chungwon Choue.

"At the Muju training camp, we want to ensure that all the innovations and reforms we have implemented over the last four years have been fully absorbed."

A WTF Extraordinary Council meeting is set to be held at the Taekwondowon on Friday (May 6), while WTF Council members will hold a joint meeting with the referees and coaches to discuss the future direction of Olympic taekwondo.

The pre-Olympic referee-coach joint training camp will be the second of its kind with the first being held in Chinese city Suzhou prior to London 2012.

The gender ratio of referees will be equal with 15 males and 15 females taking part.

An official dedication ceremony by the WTF and the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation is scheduled for Friday, appointing Taekwondowon’s T1 Arena as the WTF’s central training centre.

The centre will direct all WTF regional training centres already in operation worldwide in Azerbaijan, China, Iran, Uzbekistan, Germany and the United Kingdom.

It is expected to be a location for the education of international referees and coaches, as well as Member National Association and Continental Union leaders.

There will also be a presentation from WTF-recognised companies on new products, which will be exhibited during the joint training camp.
