Cape Town is to host South Africa's first ever Fistball World Cup in October, it has been announced.

The event, due to take place on October 14 and 15, will be organised by the Fistball Association of South Africa in conjunction with the International Fistball Association (IFA).

Fistball, billed as one of the world’s oldest team sports, is played in over 54 countries including Germany, Switzerland, United States, Brazil, Pakistan, Australia, Namibia and South Africa.

The fast paced sport, a member of SportAccord and the Association of Independent Members of Sport, is often dubbed “volleyball on grass”.

South Africa, one of the sport's rising powers, finished in 14th place in last year's World Men's Championships in Córdoba as Germany took gold.

German team TSV Pfungstadt are also reigning World Cup champions in the club event and will seek to successfully defend their title in October.

Goldfisters, North Beach Knuckledusters, Kaapse Fisters and newcomers and recent title holders the “Archbishops” will lead the home charge.

They will be joined by Brazil's Clube Merces Santa Felicidade and Australia's "Fist and the Furious".
