Hannah Russell and Matt Wylie both broke national records in the 50 metres freestyle on the final day of action at the British Para-Swimming International Meet in Glasgow.

Russell secured the first gold medal of the night with another strong swim that saw her finish the women's event in a British record time of 27.01sec.

The S12 swimmer knocked the record down to 27.22 in the heats and then went even faster in the final.

"That feels absolutely amazing," Russell said.

"I went into that having equalled my British record in the heats and I wanted to come here in the final and prove myself.

"The 50 [metres] has always been one of my main events and so to come here and do that swim has really given me a lot of confidence."

Steph Slater took the silver medal in a time of 30.89, putting the S8 swimmer into consideration for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, while bronze went to S6 swimmer Ellie Robinson in 35.63.

Wylie starred in the men’s 50m freestyle, slicing more time off the S9 British record he set in the morning’s heats.

The 19-year-old hit the qualification standard in the heats, when he set 25.96, and came back for the finals to touch home in 25.69.

"I could not be happier really," Wylie said.

"It would mean the world to me to go to Rio.

"It’s what gets you out of bed in the morning and what drives you in a hard set."

Silver medallist Ryan Crouch and bronze medallist Josef Craig hit the qualification time after touching in 26.43 and 27.27 respectively.

Bethany Firth won the women’s 200m individual medley with a time of 2:21.93 having been pushed all the way by fellow SM14 swimmer and bronze medallist Jessica-Jane Applegate, who finished in 2:30.52.

Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds won silver after the SM6 swimmer touched the wall in 3:04.13.

Sascha Kindred, another SM6 swimmer, took the gold medal in the men’s 200m individual medley after finishing in a time of 2:42.88.

Silver went to SM8 swimmer Ollie Hynd with a time of 2:26.74, while Kahoru Harazawa won bronze with a time of 2:17.44.

Several British swimmers will now head to Funchal, the capital of Portuguese island Madeira, for the 2016 International Paralympic Committee Swimming European Open Championships.

The Opening Ceremony of the Championships is due to take place on Saturday (April 30).
