A total of 135 quota places for Rio 2016 were awarded to 51 countries in the four International Boxing Association (AIBA) Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments, it has been confirmed.

The continental competitions begun with the African Olympic Qualification Event in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé and the American Olympic Qualification Event in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires, offerig a total of 63 Rio 2016 places, from March 11 to 19.

These were followed by the Asian-Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Chinese city Qian'an, where 36 places were up for grabs, from March 25 to April 2.

Samsun in Turkey hosted the European Olympic Qualification Event from April 9 to 17, offering 36 further tickets to Rio de Janeiro.

Three further opportunities remain to qualify for those athletes left seeking the final Olympic places.

The AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships take place in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana from May 19 to 27, when the final 12 women’s places will be available.

This is prior to the men’s World Olympic Qualification Event in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku from June 14 to 26, and the AIBA Pro Boxing-World Series of Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament in July.

These will take the final total of boxers at Rio 2016 up to 286.

"This has been a hugely important month in boxing, and successfully staging four first-class continental qualifying events in such a short space of time is testament to the hard work and spirit of cooperation between the National Federations, Confederations and Local Organising Committees and AIBA," said AIBA President C K Wu.

"My congratulations to those boxers whose efforts have been rewarded with qualification for Rio, and I eagerly look forward to our forthcoming last qualification events."

The four Olympic qualifiers were also used to ratify the HeadsUp! charter, AIBA’s ongoing commitment to the development and sustainability of boxers' careers.

The document was signed by National Federation Presidents Bertrand Mendouga of Cameroon and Eyup Gözgeç of Turkey, as well as Oceania Boxing Confederation (OCBC) President Ted Tanner.

"Firstly, I proudly congratulate those Oceania boxers who have won their quotas for the Olympic Games in Rio," said Tanner.

"Furthermore, the OCBC strongly supports the 'HeadsUp!' programme specially that it is being incorporated into national R&J (referee and judges) and coach certification courses."
