China’s Hui Zicheng set a world record points tally for a final on his way to winning the men’s 50 metres rifle three positions on the last day of action at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup event at the Olympic Shooting Centre in Rio de Janeiro.

Hui finished with 463.7 points, bettering the 462.5 set by Russia’s Nazar Louginets at the ISSF World Cup in Munich in 2014.

The United States' Matthew Emmons, bronze medallist in the event at London 2012, placed second with 461.6 points to secure his country its third silver of the competition, which is also serving as a test event for this year’s Olympics.

He closed the gap on leader Hui during the final shots of the match, but surrendered to the Chinese’s almost-perfect 10.8 that sealed the gold medal.

In the lead after both the kneeling and the prone series, Hui’s team-mate Zhu Qinan finished third with 451.2 points, followed by Ukraine’s Serhiy Kulish with 439.6.

Sweden’s Marcus Svensson won top honours in the men’s skeet after emerging victorious from the gold medal match against India’s Mairaj Ahmad Khan.

After both hitting 15 semi-final targets, Svensson and Khan also finished tied at the end of the regular course of the match, where they both crushed 14 clays.

In the subsequent tie-breaking shoot-off, Khan missed on his very first double, handing Svensson the first gold medal of his career.

A three-way shoot-off was required to determine the two participants of the bronze medal match with Italy’s Tammaro Cassandro, the US's Vincent Hancock and Spain’s Juan Jose Aramburu all finishing with 14 target hits at the end of the semi-final round.

Hancock, the reigning ISSF world champion and a two-time Olympic gold medallist, surprisingly missed first and ended up in fifth place.

The match for the third step of the podium saw Cassandro, a first-time semi-finalist in the ISSF World Cup, perform the perfect match.

He crushed all of his targets, claiming the bronze medal with 16 hits against Aramburu’s 15.

China finished top of the overall standings thanks to their two medals in the men’s 50m rifle three positions event.

Their two golds, two silvers and three bronzes put them ahead of Russia in second with two golds, two silvers and one bronze, and Ukraine in third with two golds and one bronze.
