Poland twice came from behind against hosts Russia in the final of the women’s team event at the European Judo Championships at the at the Tatneft Arena in Kazan, claiming the title for the first time ever.

Russia got off to a bright start in the gold medal match with Yulia Ryzhova, winner of a European bronze medal at under 52 kilograms on Thursday (April 21), overcoming Agata Perenc.

Poland fought back with a victory for Arleta Podolak at under 57kg, but they soon found themselves behind once more as Agata Ozdoba incurred a penalty for passivity in the under 63kg golden score.

Katarzyna Klys brought the world silver medallists back on level terms with success at under 70kg and the win was sealed when Katarzyna Furmanek beat Ksenia Chibisova by ippon in their over 70kg contest.

Germany and France claimed the bronze medals after defeating Ukraine and France respectively.

Poland had to settle for third place alongside Azerbaijan in the men’s team event, which was won by Georgia ahead of Russia.
