Former world champion Elisabeth Högström has been inducted into the World Curling Federation (WCF) Hall of Fame.

The induction of the Swede, winner of a gold medal at the 1981 World Women’s Curling Championships in Scottish city Perth, came at the conclusion of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in her hometown Karlstad.

Throughout an international playing career that spanned more than a decade, Högström represented her country at four World Championships, and seven European Championships.

She also took part in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, where curling was a demonstration sport,

She won six gold medals in all, triumphing at the European Championships in 1976, 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1988 to add to her world title.

Högström also won silver medals at the 1980 and 1982 World Championships in Perth and Geneva respectively, and one each at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games and the 1981 European Championships.

The 65-year-old has also spent time working with Swedish junior curlers and coached Sweden’s junior men’s team in 1999.

"I am delighted to honour Elisabeth Högström with the highest accolade in curling by inducting her into the World Curling Federation Hall of Fame," said WCF President Kate Caithness.

"Elisabeth was born in Karlstad and raised with curling, before going onto have an illustrious career in the sport, making her an extremely worthy recipient of this award."

Members of the WCF Hall of Fame are inducted either as "builders" or "curlers", the category under which Högström falls.

Curlers are those who have demonstrated World Championship-level playing ability, sportsmanship and character, and who have achieved extraordinary distinction and outstanding results in the sport of curling.

Högström is one of this season's three inductees to the WCF Hall of Fame, which is described as "the highest 'non-playing' honour that the WCF can bestow".

At this month’s World Men’s Curling Championship in Basel, Warren Hansen of Canada was inducted as a builder, which recognises someone who has given distinguished service and has made a major contribution to the development and advancement of curling internationally.

Italy’s Franco Zumofen will be inducted as a builder at the summer bonspiel in Cortina.

Prior to 2012, the WCF awarded the World Curling Freytag Award, named after the late Elmer Freytag of the United States Curling Association, who was a founding member of the International Curling Federation.
