Double London 2012 gold medallist Liwan Yang broke the women’s F54 shot put world record with an effort of 7.90 metres to continue the hosts impressive performance at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Grand Prix in Beijing.

The 38-year-old achieved the mark in her second round throw, adding seven centimetres to the previous mark set by Russia’s world silver medallist Maria Bogacheva in 2014.

Liwan was unable to secure the gold medal, however, as she finished behind compatriot Lijuan Zou, the F34 competitor recording a best effort of 8.45m.

It proved to be another dominant day for the Chinese athletes on home soil as four-time Paralympic champion Na Mi picked up two titles.

Na proved too strong in the F34 shot put event, taking the title by virtue of throwing 12.84m, before she also won the F37 discus competition with an attempt of 34.05m.

Another athlete to claim two victories on the second day of the event in the Chinese capital was Paralympic and world champion Xia Dong, who reigned supreme in the F37/38 men’s shot put F37/38 with 15.13m and the discus F12/37 with 51.14m.

Syria’s Abdulsalam Alaa managed to follow suit as he clinched the gold medal in the F53 shot put, throwing 6.78m, before he went on to win the F53/45 javelin in the afternoon session with a throw of 16.94m.

On the track, Huzhao Li, a World Championships silver medallist, clocked 15.36sec to edge team-mates Yufei Zhao and Shiran Yu to take the tape in the T53 100m event.

He then returned to secure victory in the 800m race thanks to finishing in a time of 1min 41.93sec.

Qatar’s Mohammed Al Kubaisi also seald double success as he powered to a comfortable triumph in the T34 800m in 2:11.85, which came after he sprinted to the 100m title in 17.27.

One of the most dramatic races of the day came in the women’s T11 100m as Juntingxian Jia ousted team-mate and reigning world champion Cuiqing Liu by a slender 0.01 second margin.

Juntingxian crossed the line in 12.50 to ensure she claimed the gold medal ahead of her compatriot.

China’s Paralympic and world champion Lisha Huang further asserted her status as the favourite for the Rio 2016 crown in the women’s T52/53 100m,.

She clocked dominant 16.47 to finish in front of Hongzhuan Zhou and surge to the top of the world rankings.

World men’s T36 100m champion Mohamad Puzi of Malaysia suffered a rare defeat as he was beaten by China’s Yifei Yang as the home nation continued to dominate the track events.

The crowd had more Chinese success to cheer F42/44 discus competition as world champion Juan Yao threw 43.08m to secure gold.

Her effort was 31 centimetres adrift of the mark she achieved when winning the world title in Doha last year.

More than 200 athletes are representing 21 countries in Beijing at the fifth stage of the 10-event Grand Prix.

Competition is scheduled to come to a close in the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city tomorrow.
