Switzerland's Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré claimed the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Xiamen Open title by seeing off Austrian rivals today.

The duo won their first gold medal at World Tour level as they defeated underdogs Barbara Hansel and Stefanie Schwaiger 21-17, 21-14.

They had earlier needed three sets to advance through the semi-finals against Germany's 15th seeds Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude, 21-18, 16-21, 15-13.

"We finished third here last year and finishing even better is a wonderful feeling,” said Forrer.

“We want to go to the Olympics.

"Now we made good points here, step by step we are getting closer to this big door.

"If we go there, of course we want to play well there too.

"We knew in the semi-final we didn't play our best and we didn't want that to happen again.

“We tried to serve better, play better and managed to stay calm and focused.”

The Austrians had claimed a shock semi-final win over top American seeds Kerri Walsh and April Ross, 9-21, 21-18, 15-12.

Walsh and Ross, who captured a gold and a silver in the season-opening Rio Grand Slam and Vitoria Open in Brazil, beat Laboureur and Sude in the bronze clash, 24-22, 21-15.
