An international e-sports tournament called the eGames has been launched to allow gamers to compete for their respective nations.

Held every four years, the competition will see competing nations select a national squad, comprised of male and female players over the age of 18.

They will compete in both team and individual games for their country, with the aim of competing for podium places at the event.

The tournament was officially launched at the London Games Festival and is claimed to be supported by the United Kingdom's Government.

It is hoped that the event will help to shape the future of competitive e-sports gaming, with participants seeking to win gold, silver or bronze medals.

Prize money will not be on offer at the eGames.

The inaugural event is due to be held in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic Games in August, with Brazil, Britain, Canada and the United States the first confirmed participants.

By holding the eGames across two-days in the Brazilian city, organisers believe it will help attract further partners and further showcase competitive gaming.

The eGames will then be held in host cities during Olympic years.

Competitions are expected to take place in Olympic venues.

Non-Olympic years will see national qualifiers held domestically, in order to determine the country’s representation at future eGames.

The International eGames Committee (IEGC) are to set up an International Advisory Board to assist in running the eGames.

It is claimed that it will help to install good governance, responsible gaming and ensure that competition is both inclusive and diverse.

e-sports could also be on the programme at the first World Beach Games in San Diego next year.
