The 2016 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming European Open Championships will be broadcast live and in full on the event’s official website, it has been announced.

The competition in Madeiran capital Funchal is due to be shown on www.funchal2016.com from May 1 to 7.

The coverage of the event, considered one of the most important swimming competitions ever organised in Portugal, will feature an English commentary team as part of an agreement between IPC Swimming and British free-to-air television station Channel 4.

Fifteen-time Paralympic swimming medallist Paul Noble will be joined in the commentary box by triple Paralympic champion Giles Long, as well as Liz Johnson, winner of a Paralympic gold medal at Beijing 2008 at bronze at London 2012.

About 450 swimmers representing 50 countries are due to compete at the Championships, which will be staged at the Complexo Olimpico de Piscinas da Penteada.

“Thanks to our partnership with Channel 4, we are able to offer one of the best commentator line-ups ever seen at a Championships,” IPC director of media and communications Craig Spence said.

“Viewers will have access to an unprecedented degree of experience and knowledge from three generations of swimmers who competed for, and won, medals at the highest level of the sport.

“This, combined with the fact that the European Championships are the last major competition ahead of Rio 2016, will make for an incredibly exciting few days of competition.”

A host of the world’s top athletes are set to descend on Funchal for the event, including Spain’s six-time Paralympic champion Teresa Perales and Norway’s double title holder Sarah Louise Rung, who will clash in the S5 and SB4 events.

The host country are due to be well represented in Funchal.

Five Portuguese swimmers have already secured their place at this year’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The quintet is made up of Simone Fragoso, David Grachat, David Carreira, João Pina and Nelson Lopes.
