Andorra has launched their first Sports Games for the Elderly ©COA

The Olympic Committee of Andorra (COA) is to hold its first Sports Games for the Elderly, it has been announced.

A presentation detailing the event took place at the Escaldes Engordany retirement home in the tiny European country, with COA President Jaume Martí in attendance. 

The Games will be held in collaboration with the Government, the country's municipalities and the Senior Andorrans Federation.

Ester Fennel, Secretary of State for Social Affairs and Employment, was also present to launch the idea alongside COA secretary general Manuel Fernandez Hermoso and other Andorran personalities.

The results of a wide social study on the elderly, carried out by the Andorran Centre of Studies and funded by the COA, were presented to the audience before the officials in attendance spoke about the new initiative.

Elderly people will be invited not only to participate in the Games, and therefore prepare for competitions, but will be able to help out with the oganisation of the event with school children and local experts.

Andorra's seven municipalities will take part in the Games with a team each.

The sports on the programme will be billiards, gymnastics, golf, swimming, orienteering, archery and bocce

These will take place on the morning of June 15, with "quieter" events such as dominoes, card games and dancing taking place in the afternoon.

The programme will end with a "moment of conviviality" inspired by Olympic values and an award gala in the evening.
