Wrestlers from Africa and Oceania will be seeking to claim 36 Rio 2016 Olympic berths on offer when their continental qualification tournament begins tomorrow in Algiers.

Algeria’s Tarek Aziz Benaissa and Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye were the only two wrestlers from Africa to secure spots as a result of their performances at last year’s World Championships in Las Vegas.

Adekuoroye, the bronze medallistin the women’s 53 kilogram freestyle, will be attending the continental qualifier to lend her support to a 10-strong Nigerian team.

Their best chance of success is likely to be All-Africa Games champion Aminat Adeniyi, who will be competing in the 63kg division.

She will face competition from Tunisia’s All-Africa Games gold medallist Hela Riabi, who has moved up to the higher weight division, as well as New Zealand’s Tayla Ford, the Oceania champion.

With only two Olympic qualification berths on offer in each division, the 63kg event is expected to be one of the fiercest competitions during the three-day event.

In the men’s freestyle Sahit Prizreni will be one of the key contenders in the 65kg event as he looks to appear at a third Olympics.

His appearances at both Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 came when he was representing Albania but the 33-year-old is now seeking to represent Australia at Rio 2016.

In the men’s Greco-Roman competitions, Morocco’s Zied Ait Ouagram and Tunisia’s Radhouane Chebbi will be seeking to book places at their second successive Games.

Eight-time African champion Ait Ouagram is the overwhelming favourite in the 75kg event and Chebbi has won the 130kg continental crown on three occasions in his career.

He could face the threat of Egypt’s Mohamed Ahmed Abdellatif, winner of gold medals in the heavyweight classification at the most recent All-African Games and African Championships.

Egypt will hope to replicate their success from the qualifier before London 2012, when their wrestlers secured a 13 berths.

Twelve other nations from African and Oceania also claimed places in Morocco four-years ago.
