Belgian cyclist Daan Myngheer has died in hospital at the age of 22 following a heart attack suffered during the Criterium International in Corsica.

Myngheer had reportedly lost contact with the peloton during the final 25 kilometres of the opening leg of the three-stage race on Saturday (March 26).

He suffered a heart attack while in an ambulance on its way to hospital, where he was placed into an induced coma on arrival.

His Roubaix Lille Metropole team has now confirmed that Myngheer has died and revealed that the cyclist has donated his organs.

He is the second Belgium cyclist to die in as many days, with Wanty-Groupe Gobert rider Antoine Demoitié passing away following a crash involving a motorbike during the Gent-Wevelgem one-day classic.

“It is with great emotion, that we will make you part of the death of Daan,” Myngheer's team wrote on Facebook.

“He lost his last race after having fought like a grand champion.

“He died on Monday 28 March at 19.08 in the presence of his parents, his sister Fleur and his partner Emely at Ajaccio Hospital.

“Daan is going to donate his organs to help other people, it was his will.

“All our thoughts, the most sincere will to parents, to Fleur, his sister, to Emely as well as to the whole family.”

The 25-year-old Demoitié was involved in a crash in Sainte-Marie-Cappel, with around 115 kilometres of the International Cycling Union (UCI) World Tour race remaining.

Demoitié was confirmed to have died as a result of his injuries yesterday, and his team manager Jean-François Bourlart has now paid tribute to the rider.

“Antoine joined Wanty-Groupe Gobert this season and wanted to ride World Tour races, every time we spoke with each other, he only spoke about that," he said.

“Last Friday, he rode his first World Tour race: E3 Harelbeke.

“He was part of the day’s breakaway and climbed the Taaienberg with the best, he was very proud of himself and we couldn’t have been more proud of him.

“On Sunday, the incredible happened, the inconceivable, we can’t believe it.”
