Five-time world champion Mary Kom of India survived a scare on her way to booking a place in the last 16 of the flyweight division at the AIBA Asian/Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event as she overcame Kazakhstan's Nazym Kyzaibay in Qian’an in China.

The 33-year-old veteran, bronze medallist at London 2012 and the reigning Asian Games champion, was made to work hard for her victory as she was pushed all the way by Kyzaibay, eventually progressing via a split decision.

India's boxers endured another mixed day at the competition, however, as Asian Championships silver medallist Vikas Krishan, seeded second in the middleweight category, was beaten by home hope Zhao Minggang.

Fano Kori of Australia produced an efficient display to outpoint Taipei's Chi-Wen Huang in the welterweight class as the Oceanian boxers, competing alongside their Asian counterparts at an Olympic boxing qualifier for the first time, enjoyed a largely successful day.

Kori's team-mate Harry Garside proved too strong for Chad Milnes of New Zealand at middleweight, before Shelley Watts, seeded third in the women's lightweight competition, ousted Chinese Taipei's Huang Hsiao-Wen.

There was disappointment for Australia's Joseph Goodall, Commonwealth Games silver medallist at Glasgow 2014, in the super heavyweight division as he suffered a third-round knockout at the hands of New Zealand's Patrick Mailata.

Mailata was one of four victors from New Zealand on day two as Josh Nyika and brother David also progressed, along with Keegan O'Kane-Jones.

Commonwealth Games champion at light heavyweight David Nyika has since made the step up to heavyweight and wasn't at his best, though the Kiwi still managed to get past Jordan's Ihab Al-Matbouli by unanimous decision.

His brother Josh, who competes at welterweight, squeezed through to the round of 16 with a split decision victory against Kyrgyzstan rival Erkinbek Bolotbek Uulu.

Bantamweight Keegan O'Kane-Jones was another fighter to record a unanimous success as he confidently dispatched Fiji's Pauliasi Ratu Jnr.

The top three boxers in each category from the men's competition and top two from the women's draw will secure qualification for this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
