The organisation’s vice-president John Fulham will led the media team from the Brazilian city in his role as communications officer.

Fulham, a four-time Paralympian, will receive the support of sports journalist Cliona Foley, who wrote for the Irish Independent for 25 years.

Mary McGuire, the media and events manager at Paralympics Ireland, will join the pair in Rio de Janeiro alongside Cycling’s Ireland’s Heather Boyle and Swim Ireland’s Trish Mayon.

They will be tasked with providing daily updates via press releases, as well as updating content on Paralympics Ireland’s website and social media channels.

“We are delighted to be sending an experienced media team to Rio to bring the colour and dynamism of Paralympic Sport to every Irish home during the Paralympic Games,” said Liam Harbison, Paralympics Ireland chief executive.

“London 2012 demonstrated the huge appetite amongst the Irish public to follow and connect with Ireland’s Paralympians.

“It’s important to us as an organisation to satisfy that demand and provide the means to tell the inspirational story of Ireland’s Paralympic success.”

Sportsfile photographers Diarmuid Greene and Paul Mohan will also be providing reproduction fee free photography from the Games.

Sinead Naughton, Paralympics Ireland communications and events director, will manage their media service from Dublin.

The news of the media team comes a month after Paralympics Ireland launched their awareness campaign titled “More Than Sport”.

The organisation will be hopeful of a similar performance to London 2012, where their team earned a total of eight gold, three silver and five bronze medals.

“We have many exciting things in the pipeline between now and Rio - most notable of these will be the announcement of Team Ireland on July 5 by Chef de Mission, Denis Toomey,” said Harbison.

“He will lead a team of approximately 45 athletes to the Games who will represent their country across 10 different sports.”
