Home fans were left celebrating a Brazilian double at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Vitória Open after local pairings triumphed in both the men’s and women’s finals.

World champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt led the men's challenge with the top seeded pairing expected to deliver success against the Italian pairing of Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai.

Despite the European duo having made an impressive run to the final, they were unable to muster a strong enough threat in the opening set, with Alison and Bruno claiming it 21-13.

With the head-to-head record between the pairings standing at three wins apiece before the tie, it was no surprise that the Italians produced an improved display in the second to threaten taking the match to a decider.

However, Alison and Bruno eventually wrapped up a straight sets victory by taking the second 21-18.

"This is a great day for us to win a gold medal match,” said Bruno.

“With Alison being raised here and me now living in the area, we had a lot of family, friends and fans cheering us on this week.

“It is also a good week for us after finishing a disappointing fifth last week in Rio.

“This week our performance was much better.”

The Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsenm claimed bronze after defeating Italy’s Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri 21-18, 21-15.

Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes delivered the second Brazilian success of the day, with the duo triumphing in the women’s gold medal match against the United States’ April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings.

The American pairing were yet to taste defeat this year, but the Rio Grand Slam winners saw two set points slip by en-route to losing the opener 22-20.

They were unable to force the contest into a decider, with Larissa and Talita winning a tightly fought second set 21-19.

Germany’s Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick won the bronze medal by overcoming Australia’s Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy 20-22, 21-17, 15-11.
