Japan’s Yukio Makino and Kenji Takahashi claimed their continent's sole 49er Olympic spot after winning gold at the 2016 Asian Sailing Federation (ASAF) Asian Championship in Abu Dhabi.

The pair sealed victory with a third-place finish in the medal race and were joined on the podium by South Korea’s Bongjin Chae and Dongwook Kim, and Oman’s Musab Al Hadi and Hashim Al Rashdi, who came second and third respectively.

"I think it is good," said Makino.

"To still be able to pull off a gold medal feels good.

"We've got a lot of things to go and work on, so we'll do that and we'll be back fighting fit."
