Russia's Pavel Kulizhnikov paid for his positive drugs test as he was beaten to the overall 1000 metres title at the International Skating Union (ISU) Speed Skating World Cup final in Heerenveen today.

The 21-year-old is one of a string of athletes to fail a test for heart attack drug meldonium, which was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency banned list on January 1.

It was the second failure of the two-time world sprint champion's career, and meant he missed the action in Heerenveen through suspension.

He was level with Dutch skater Kjeld Nuis on 480 points going into the final event of the season but his absence allowed his rival to claim the crown for himself in front of his own supporters.

The Netherlands skater achieved the feat in style too, winning the race to finish on a tally of 650 points.

His winning time of 1 min 8.94 sec beat compatriot Kai Verbij into second after he clocked 1:09.08, with Russia's Denis Yuskov third in 1:09.22.

Gerben Jorritsma was third overall with 396 points behind Kulizhnikov, who won four 1000m races this season.

In the women's 500m, American Heather Richardson-Bergsma won the overall title despite not winning a race over the distance this season.

She was second today behind compatriot Brittany Bowe, the same 1-2 as yesterday's race, but finished on a winning overall tally of 848.

Bowe won today with a time of 37.64 with her team-mate behind her after stopping the watches at 37.88.

Third place went to Heather McLean of Canada with a time of 38.07.

China's Hong Zhang was second overall with 842 points as Bowe finished third on 785.

However, Bowe did enjoy the consolation of winning the overall 1500m crown as her time of 1:54.34 was enough for victory over the distance.

Richardson-Bergsma was second in 1:54.90 ahead of The Netherlands' Antoinette de Jong who clocked 1:56.32.

Bowe's overall winning tally was 590, with Richardson-Bergsma second on 501.

Dutch skater Marrit Leenstra took third overall with a total of 396.

Eight-time world champion Sven Kramer of The Netherlands won the men's 5,000m title after victory on the day in 6:11.44.

His team-mate Jorrit Bergsma was second in 6:12.74 as Sverre Lunde Pedersen of Norway came third in 6:16.36.

Kramer and Bergsma both finished on 530 points with Kramer getting the nod thanks to his win in Heerenveen and more victories throughout the season.

Elsewhere, Netherlands and Japan won the men's and women's relays respectively to seal the overall titles.

The World Cup FInal will conclude tomorrow.
