The Virgin Islands Olympic Committee (VIOC) has marked the Olympic year by holding a photography contest.

Open to all amateur photographers, the competition sought to find an "incredible" picture of a Virgin Islander demonstrating "sport for life".

The photograph could feature sport at any level, and all entries were judged based on creativity and visual skills.

Subjects, who could be of any age, had to be from the United States Virgin Islands, where the VIOC has jurisdiction.

A judging panel consisted of residents from the three main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas.

The overall winner of the competition - who like the Olympics will be awarded gold - will win a prize of $1000 (£706/€896) when announced.

There will also be a silver prize of $750 (£530/€672) and a bronze prize of $500 (£353/€448).

In addition, five photographers will win $50 (£35/€44) for achieving an "honourable mention".

The US Virgin Islands won their only Olympic medal at Seoul 1988, when sailor Peter Holmberg won finn class silver.

They are known for luger Anne Abernathy, the oldest female athlete to compete at the Winter Olympics.

The 62-year-old was the first woman over 50 to qualify for the Games at Salt Lake City 2002.

Known as "Grandma Luge", she targeted a place at the Rio 2016 Olympics in August as an archer.
