Norway’s Heidi Weng sprinted to victory at the close of the 15 kilometres skiathlon as the race leader looks to close on the overall classification at Ski Tour Canada.

The 24-year-old began stage six of the event in Canmore with a narrow advantage over overall World Cup leader Therese Johaug and the duo went head-to-head on the stage.

Both the Norwegian skiers broke away from the main field in the early stages of the event, but they were unable to move more than 20 seconds clear of the chasing pack, throughout the duration of the race.

Weng claimed a morale boosting win over Johaug, though, at the close of the stage, edging out her rival by 0.8 seconds, finishing in 39min 41sec.

A Norwegian clean sweep of the podium was completed by Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen, who finished 9.8 seconds behind Weng.

The stage win meant Weng’s advantage in the overall race now stands at 2.9 seconds, heading into the final two stages of the season-ending event.

The second place finish keeps Johaug clear at the top of the overall World Cup standings on 2,201 points, with fellow Norwegian Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg second on 2,001.

There was further success for Norway in the men’s event as Martin Johnsrud Sundby produced a strong performance to win the 30km skiathlon in 1 hour 16min 29.7sec.

Race leader Sergey Usiugov finished as the runner-up on the stage, the Russian crossing the line 2.8 seconds behind.

Finland’s Matti Heikkinen won the bronze medal in 1:16:33.4.

Usiugov currently boasts a 47.3 second advantage over Norway’s Petter Northug heading into the final two stages.

“It was a good race for me,” Usiugov said.

“I picked up a few bonus seconds, I am still in a lead of the Ski Tour.

“There are two important competitions left ahead and I have to stay focused.”

The men’s and women’s fields will enjoy a final rest day tomorrow, ahead of competing in freestyle events from 15km and 10km, respectively on Friday (March 11).
