Amro El Geziry produced a stunning home victory today at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup in Cairo, leading from start to finish in front of an excited home crowd.

El Geziry, one of the world's most consistent performers who won a silver medal at the 2014 World Championships, had never won a World Cup before and finished 14th and 22nd at previous Cairo legs of the World Cup series.

He began with a superb swim of 1min 55.89sec before earning 24 victories in his 35 fencing bouts.

A clear round in the showjumping gave him a huge 34 second lead from Jun Woongtae heading into the run/shoot finale.

The Egyptian then eased across the line in 12:00.91 to win comfortably as a thrilling battle unfolded behind him.

“I am so happy, no words could describe it," he said afterwards.

"It’s my first gold medal and it has happened in my home country.

"You can see the crowd…I’m just so happy.

“After my last shoot, when I only missed one, I thought ‘that’s it’ because I knew nobody could make that time up on me.

“Everybody was cheering, and it was amazing.

"It was one of the best moments of my life.”

Hungary's Adam Marosi crossed the line together with France's Valentin Belaud.

Both were eight seconds behind the winner but it was the Hungarian who was ultimately awarded victory.

Jun produced a solid performance to end-up in fourth place.

“I think this was the best possible result for the Egyptian organisers, for the Federation President Sherif El-Erian and his team," said UIPM President Klaus Schormann afterwards.

“Many times Amro El Geziry was in the leading position in competitions in the last year, and in the end other people have been on the podium.

"This time, the distance was enough for him and he had a good run and shoot, and everything was perfect."
