London 2012 silver medalist Jessica Fox claimed women's kayak victory in the opening round of the Canoe Slalom Oceania Championships in Penrith today, an event that doubbled as the second Australian nomination trial for this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Winning two of the three nomination events is the official requirement for selection, with Fox having also won at last month's Australian Championships.

She was the quickest Australian in the qualification round today.

“It’s kind of a bit of shock, it hasn’t sunk in yet,” the 2014 world champion said.

“It’s been a big couple of weeks, in the lead-up you can really feel the tension, you can feel this is the big event, so it was really good to perform today.

“I remember the qualifications for London, it was a totally different story.

“Then I had the mindset that I was young, if I miss out it won’t matter, it will be a good experience either way.

“This time around this is what I really wanted, and I wouldn’t have settled for anything less. I would have been really upset.”

Robin Jeffery was first Australian in the men's C1 event today.

As Ian Burrows won at the Australian Championships, however, the semi-finals tomorrow will be the deciding test.

Jaxon Merritt claimed the top K1 men’s time today after a sizzling second run put him 0.31 seconds ahead of countryman Lucien Delfour.

Merritt’s time of 88.31 saw him finish fourth overall, 1.20 seconds behind Frenchman Mathieu Biazizzo.

A third trial is now due to be held on Sunday (February 21).
