Australia were crowned champions of the 2016 Oceania Mixed Team Badminton Championships after Choo and Gronya Somerville won the decisive women’s doubles match against New Zealand at the X-TRM North Harbour Centre in Auckland.

Having won the past three editions of the event, the Australians began as the favourite and took an early lead against the home side when Robin Middleton and Leanne Choo won their mixed doubles match 19-21, 21-12, 21-15.

A men’s singles win for New Zealand’s Asher Richardson was quickly followed by a 21-19, 21-18 men’s doubles victory for their paring of Leydon-Davis and Kevin James Dennerly-Minturn to turn the tie around.

The results put all the pressure on Wendy Chen as the Australian needed to win her singles match against Vicki Copeland to keep their hopes alive and she levelled the tie with a 21-16, 21-19 win.

The Somerville pairing completed the turnaround by Australia as they triumphed 21-10, 21-16 over New Zealand’s Michelle Chan Ky and Danielle Tahuri in the women’s doubles to secure the gold medal.

“Going into the matches I think everyone was pretty confident but Rob and I had a shaky start in the Mixed Doubles,” said Choo.

“After that it was such a scrap with New Zealand but the Aussies fought really well and we came out on top.”

Tahiti celebrated clinching the bronze medal for the first time at the Championships, earning a dominant 5-0 win over New Caledonia.

The men’s and women’s team competitions are scheduled to begin tomorrow at the venue.
