Favourites China came from behind to beat Singapore 3-2 on the opening day of the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Hyderabad, India.

Tian Houwei gave China the lead by beating Derek Wong in the men’s singles before his team-mates Liu Xiaolong and Qiu Zihan suffered a surprise 16-21, 21-13, 21-11 defeat against Terry Hee and Loh Kean Hean in a men’s doubles encounter.

Singapore went ahead in the Group MA clash when Loh Kean Yew, Kean Hean's brother, overcame Wang Zhengming, 21-15, 21-16.

But China’s second men’s doubles pair, Li Jinhui and Liu Yuchen, came to their country’s rescue by defeating Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya 21-18, 21-14, after which Qiao Bin sealed victory with a 21-15, 19-21, 21-13 success against Ryan Ng.

Group MD saw South Korea thrash the Philippines 5-0, while in Group MC, Indonesia swept past Maldives 5-0 and Chinese Taipei demolished Thailand 4-1.

Thailand’s sole point came in the second men’s doubles with Puavaranukroh Dechapol and Kedren Kittinupong beating Chen Hung Ling and Wang Chi-Lin in three games.

In the women’s team event, China beat Hong Kong 5-0 in their opening Group WA tie.

Thailand were on the right end of the same scoreline against Sri Lanka in Group WB.

At the Oceania Mixed Team Championships in Auckland, New Caledonia comfortably accounted for Guam 5-0 with Loic Mennesson and Johanna Kou downing David Yao and Michelle Kremper 21-12, 21-6 in the mixed doubles.

Further wins by Thomas Lahaut over Sunardi Li in the men’s singles and Cecilia Moussy over Emily Yang in the women’s singles gave New Caledonia an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Men’s doubles duo Lahaut and Mennesson, and women’s doubles pairing Kou and Moussy completed the sweep for New Caledonia, who went on to beat Tahiti 3-2.

Moussy gave New Caledonia the lead against Tahiti after the third match, but Leo Cucuel and Hugo Sautereau won the men’s doubles over Lahaut and Mennesson to take the match to the wire.

Moussy and Kou stood up to the task for New Caledonia, winning their women’s doubles contest against Aurelie Boutin and Pauline Segrestan 21-14, 21-14 to make it 3-2 for their team.

Tahiti beat Tonga 4-1, while Tonga beat Guam by the same margin.

Top seeds Denmark made a strong start to the European Men's & Women's Team Championships in Kazan as their men’s team beat Turkey 5-0 and their women’s team defeated Finland 4-1.

At the Africa Continental Team Championships, hosts Mauritius began their bid for glory by beating Zimbabwe 5-0 in both the men’s and women’s events.
